Library Policies
Circulation
Books circulate for a period of three weeks; audiovisual materials circulate overnight or for a weekend. Special arrangements may be made for books on reserve and reference books. Current issues of magazines and journals remain in the library; past issues circulate overnight or over the weekend. We encourage renewal of materials needed for longer periods of time. Please return all materials on time so that they can be used by others who need them.
Charges for
Overdue Materials.
Fines are calculated per school calendar day. They are $.05 per school calendar
day for books, $.25 for audiovisual materials and magazines, and $1.00 for
textbook, reserve books, and reference items. A maximum fine of $5.00 for
regularly circulating books, textbooks, audiovisual materials, and magazines
may be imposed. The maximum fine for reserve and reference materials is $10.00.
Charges for
Lost Materials.
Charges for lost materials are calculated on the basis of replacement cost
for in-print materials plus a $5.00 processing fee. For out-of-print items,
a replacement cost may be charged; or a flat fee of $15.00 for paperbacks
and $25.00 for hardcover books and audiovisual materials, or their original
cost (whichever is higher), will be charged; in addition, there is a $5.00
processing fee per item. NOTE: Library materials must be returned or paid
for before seniors may graduate or before students entering grades 9-12 may
receive their admit cards and schedules for the fall.
Computer Use
Behavior
The library welcomes
donations but reserves the right to accept gifts for the collection or to
donate them to the parent-sponsored Book Fair.
Group Study Room
The Group Study Room provides students with a place where they may study together in a group; however, it is not a student lounge or a place where students may eat. Although students may talk there, all other rules for library behavior must be observed.
Special Collections
Horace
Mann Alumni/ae Collection.
The Horace Mann School has many distinguished alumni/ae who have published
professional writing. The school attempts to obtain at least one or more copies
of books by our graduates. Circulation copies are integrated into the main
collection and are designated with ALUM in the call numbers. Recently archived
copies are displayed in a case in the Katz Library. Older titles are displayed
in the Head of School’s office.
Henry Geldzahler Collection.
Henry Geldzahler (HM ’53) willed his collection of books to the Katz Library.
Mr. Geldzahler was the first curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Department
of Twentieth Century Art. His generous donation has strengthened our modern
art book collection.
Textbooks.
For students’ convenience, the library provides at least one copy of most
textbooks used in larger classes. Students may use these texts in the library.
A textbook bookcase is dedicated for this purpose. Students must return textbooks
to this case when they are finished using them.
