the Reference Desk
for one week after the class.
The 6th Grade Pre-Columbian Project
1. During class we looked in the Online Catalog, which can be found on the library home page.
Enter the keyword, in this case the name of the kingdom.
Remember that the same name can be spelled several different ways, for instance Songhai and Songhay
and Aksum and Axum.
You can also expand your search by typing in African Kingdoms.
Expand it even more by typing 6th grade Africa Project.Click on Search Everything or press the Enter key.
Your results will include the call number of the book which tells you where it can be found. Remember, call numbers include both the numbers and the letters.
A book with the word REF in front of it can be found in the Reference Room of the library (the large room to the right of the library entrance). You can ask the librarian for a key to the copy machine so that you can make free copies from Reference books.
The Index to a Reference book can be found in the back of the last volume. Click here to learn to use the Index.
2. Once again you can go to the Online Catalog to find atlases.
Click on the Power Search tab.Next to word or phrase type 6th grade Africa Project. On the next line pull down the tab that says author and change it to word or phrase and type in atlas. Then click on Search.
Remember that atlases and timeline books are very useful when trying to discover what was going on in the arts and history during this time.
3. Next we looked in several Electronic Databases. These can be found by going to the library home page and clicking on Electronic Databases.

Here we also searched by the name of the kingdom.
If you are searching for 2 words together put them in quotes "Great Zimbabwe"
4. Don't forget Encyclopedias
You will find good information in Encyclopedia Britannica and the World Book
IMPORTANT-
If you xerox a page from a book you should always xerox the title page
and the page after the title page for your bibliography.
If you use a web site or an article from an Electronic Database always get the
URL (web address beginning with http://)

The 6th grade computer classes are doing a project in conjunction with their science classes. The topic is a famous astronomer.

A book with the word BIO in front of it can be found on the shelves directly in front of the Electronic Classroom.
We also searched using the word astronomy.
2. Next we looked in several Electronic Databases. These can be found by going to the library home page and clicking on Electronic Databases!
The databases we used were Biography Resource Center, INFOTRAC Junior Edition and Student Resource Center.
Here we also searched by the name of the astronomer.
3. From the above information we were able to find out the time period that our astronomer lived in.
Now we can look
in the Online Catalog again to find books about the history
of that period.
Remember that timeline books are very useful when trying to discover what was
going on in the arts and history during this time.
